Book Notes Guidelines

Guidelines for Submitting Book Notes

Book notes are two page, double-spaced reviews that describe the content, method, and theory of the book---without overt evaluative comment. The point is to offer a shorthand guide to new books.

JFR editors have elected to publish in print form only articles, forums, issue-related papers, and substantive book review essays.  Book notes, however, are published on-line in order to offer readers more reviews of recent books and to help bridge the gap between print and on-line publishing.  In making information about these books more accessible, we also hope to provide a service to the discipline.  As always, individuals may keep the books they review.  For a list of available books, please contact jofr@indiana.edu.

Format

Please type your note, double-spaced, and include the following information: title, subtitle, author, editor, place of publication, publisher, date, roman numeral number of pages, arabic number of pages, and any other relevant information such as indices, photographs, bibliography, notes, etc.  List the price at the end.

Example:

A Folklorist's Progress: Reflections of a Scholar's Life.  By Stith Thompson.  Ed. John H. McDowell, Inta Gale Carpenter, Donald Braid, and Erika Peterson-Veatch.  Bloomington: Indiana University Folklore Institute, 1996.  Pp. xxi + 353.  Index, biographical glosses, selected bibliography, photos. $40.00 cloth, $20.00 paper.
